Neurostimulation
Brain Stimulation

Neuromodulation or Neurostimulation  is the process of altering the neural activity in the nervous system through the application of various techniques. At Flatland Center for Brain we provide you with various neuromodulation interventions.

TDCS

TDCS, or transcranial direct current stimulation, is a non-invasive form of neuromodulation where a weak electrical current is applied to the brain via electrodes placed on the scalp. The technique involves an anode and a cathode electrode, with the anode typically placed over the target region. By delivering low-intensity current, TDCS aims to modulate the excitability of neurons, potentially influencing their firing thresholds and synaptic plasticity. TDCS is being explored as a potential therapeutic tool for various neurological and psychiatric conditions, although more research is needed to establish its clinical efficacy and optimal parameters.

tACS

TACS, or transcranial alternating current stimulation, is another form of neuromodulation that involves applying alternating electrical currents to the brain using scalp electrodes. Unlike TDCS, which uses direct current, TACS utilizes alternating current with varying frequencies. By delivering oscillating electrical stimulation, TACS aims to entrain or modulate the activity of neural circuits in a frequency-specific manner. This technique has the potential to influence brain rhythms and synchronization, which are associated with various cognitive and neural processes. TACS is an active area of research and holds promise for applications in cognitive enhancement, motor rehabilitation, and understanding brain function, although further investigation is needed to establish its effectiveness and safety.

Neurofeedback
Brain training

Neurofeedback is a technique used in neuromodulation that involves real-time monitoring and self-regulation of brain activity. It typically involves the use of sensors to measure brainwave patterns, such as electroencephalography (EEG), and providing immediate feedback to individuals about their brain activity. This feedback is presented in a visual or auditory format, allowing individuals to observe and learn to self-regulate their brain activity. Through repeated training sessions, neurofeedback aims to enable individuals to modify and optimize their brainwave patterns, promoting desired brain states and improving cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning. Neurofeedback has been applied to various conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and performance enhancement. However, further research is needed to refine protocols, establish effectiveness, and understand the underlying mechanisms.

QEEG / Brain Mapping

qEEG, or quantitative electroencephalography, is a technique used in the context of neuromodulation to quantitatively analyze and map brainwave activity. It involves recording the electrical activity of the brain through electrodes placed on the scalp, similar to standard EEG. However, qEEG goes beyond visual interpretation by applying advanced computational algorithms to analyze the EEG data. This analysis provides objective measures and comparisons of brainwave patterns, identifying deviations from normative databases and highlighting potential dysfunctions or abnormalities. qEEG can assist in identifying specific brain regions or frequency bands that may benefit from neuromodulation interventions. By providing detailed and individualized information about brain activity, qEEG helps guide the selection and optimization of neuromodulation techniques for various applications, such as personalized treatment protocols and neurofeedback training.
